Coral Gables, Fla. (www.sonyericssonopen.com) – In a battle of the last two men to win the Sony Ericsson Open, top-seed Roger Federer captured his 12th career Grand Slam title on Sunday with a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-4 win over rising 20-year-old Serbian star Novak Djokovic in the final of the US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows, New York.

With his 12th Grand Slam title, Federer surpassed Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver and tied Roy Emerson for second on the all-time list. He is now two shy of Pete Sampras’ all-time record of 14 major titles.

Federer, who was playing in his 10th straight Grand Slam final, also became just the second player in history to win four consecutive US Open titles joining Bill Tilden (1920-25).

Djokovic, playing in his first Grand Slam final, broke Federer to take a 6-5 lead and then looked poised to win the opening set going up 40-0 on his ensuing service game. But the World’s No. 1 ranked player fought off five set points to break back and even the set at 6-6. Federer went on to win the tiebreak, 7-4.

The second set nearly followed the same script as the first. Djokovic led 6-5 and held two set points on Federer’s serve. But Federer once again held off Djokovic sending the set to another tiebreaker which he dominated, 7-2.

Djokovic continued to battle in the third set but could not stop Federer on this night. On match point Djokovic’s drop shot hit the net sending Federer to his knees in celebration.

The US Open final was a match-up of the two men who have won the last three Sony Ericsson Open titles. Federer won back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006 while Djokovic captured this year’s Sony Ericsson Open crown.

Djokovic’s win this year in Miami marked his first ATP Master’s Series title and was a stepping stone to his rise up the rankings which included semifinal berths at both the French Open and Wimbledon Championships.
