Coral Gables, Fla. ( www.sonyericssonopen.com) - 2004 Sony Ericsson Open Champion Andy Roddick won both his singles matches, including the tie clinching point against Jonas Bjorkman, to lead the United States to a 4-1 win over Sweden in the semifinals of the Davis Cup.
The United States advances to the final and will host defending champion Russia (Nov. 30-Dec. 2) in the first Davis Cup final on US soil since 1992.
Roddick did not drop a set in his two victories. He opened the tie with a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over Joachim Johansson, a match which saw him record 30 aces. He then cliched the US victory two days later with his 6-2, 7-6 (3), 6-4 win over Bjorkman.
The United States, which captured its last title in Moscow in 1995, will attempt to win the Davis Cup for the 32nd time. The Americans will also be looking to avenge last year’s 3-2 loss to Russia in the semifinals.
Russia, led by Igor Andreev’s two singles wins, advanced with a 3-2 win over Germany. If Russia is able to defend its title it would become the first nation since the United States in 1990 to win both the Davis Cup and Fed Cup in the same year.
In World Group qualifying, both Serbia and Peru advanced for the first time. Led by 2007 Sony Ericsson Open Champion Novak Djokovic, Serbia defeated Australia, 4-1, in Belgrade. The loss pushes Australia out of the World Group for just the second time.
In Lima, Peru received victories from Ivan Miranda and Luis Horna to knock off Belarus, 4-1.
Great Britain will be returning to the World Group in 2008 for the first time in four years following its 4-1 victory over Croatia at Wimbledon. The win was bitter sweet for Tim Henman who announced he would be retiring from the pro tour.
Korea, which recorded a 3-2 win over the Slovak Republic, will be making its first World Group appearance since 1987.
In one of the biggest upsets in World Group qualifying, Israel defeated Chile, 3-2, to return to the World Group after a 13-year absence. Israel, which does not have a player on its roster ranked in the top-100, was led by Dudi Sela who recorded impressive wins over Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu.
In Prague, World No. 1 Roger Federer recorded two singles victories but could not prevent Switzerland from dropping out of the World Group for the first time in 13 years. The Czech Republic, led by Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek, defeated Switzerland, 3-2.
In the remaining ties, Austria defeated Brazil, 4-1, in Innsbruck, while Romania edged Japan, 3-2. |
