Coral Gables, Fla. ( www.sonyericssonopen.com) - Playing in her first singles tournament in 12 months, Lindsay Davenport surprised everyone, including herself, by winning the Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic in Bali.
Davenport, who gave birth to her first child on June 10, defeated top-seed and World No. 3 Jelena Jankovic, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, in the quarterfinals as well as the No. 2 seed Daniela Hantuchova, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, in the final.
“It’s just overwhelming and exciting,” said Davenport. “I certainly exceeded my expectations in how I’d play.”
With the win, Davenport becomes the lowest ranked player (No. 234) to capture a title this season and the fourth lowest in history.
Davenport continued her strong play the next week in Beijing reaching the semifinals of the China Open which included wins over Eleni Daniilidou and Elena Dementieva.
Another player who made noise in Bali was 2007 Luxilon Cup champion Sorana Cirstea. Cirstea reached the semifinals which included a win over Patty Schnyder, her first victory over a top-20 opponent. |
