2008 Sony Ericsson Open Women's Final Is Now Set

The 2008 Sony Ericsson Open women’s final is now set. Defending champion and No. 8 seed Serena Williams will face No. 4 seed Jelena Jankovic on Saturday, April 5 beginning at noon at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park.

Tickets for the women’s final are still available. Contact the Sony Ericsson Open Ticket Office at (305) 442-3367 or go online at www.sonyericssonopen.com.

Williams was the first to advance to the final with a thrilling 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over third-seed Svetlana Kuznetsova. It seems that Serena has once again found her game at Key Biscayne knocking off two top-five players in three days, including world No. 1 Justine Henin on Tuesday in straight sets (6-2, 6-0).

“I played a really good opponent today who has been down several match points in this tournament already, so I knew going in she wasn’t just going to give it to me,” Williams said. “In this match, it seemed like every point was crucial, like at any point the match could have turned a different way. It was really a good match, just to focus on each point.”

Serena will face Jelena Jankovic who defeated Vera Zvonareva 6-1, 6-4 in the evening match. Jankovic leads the all-time series 3-2, most recently scoring a victory over Williams in the Australian Open quarterfinals in January.

But while Jelena may hold the series lead, Serena might possess the intangibles. As a resident of Palm Beach Gardens, Williams claims home-court advantage in South Florida and has friend and family support in Miami.

A Williams victory on Saturday would mark her fifth Sony Ericsson Open title tying her with Steffi Graff for the most women’s singles titles in tournament history.

“This is one of my favorite tournaments. I love playing here. All my friends come out.” Williams said. “I promised tickets for Saturday, so I was like, ‘I can’t lose. I’ve got to stay in there a little bit longer.’”
