It’s final: Rafael Nadal will face Nikolay Davydenko in the Sony Ericsson Open men’s singles final on Sunday, April 6 at 1 p.m.
Nadal’s ticket was punched Friday as he bested Tomas Berdych in two sets 7-6(6), 6-2 that allowed the world No. 2 to make his second Sony Ericsson final since 2005.
Nadal’s other victims from the last week include ninth-ranked James Blake (3-6, 6-3, 6-1) and 16-th seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu (6-4, 6-4).
“I think I am playing very well in this tournament,” Nadal said. “The first set was tough (against Berdych), especially in the end, but today was a very great match because it was against a tough player like Berdych. I’m happy for the win.”
Davydenko started his trip to the finals through Simone Bolelli (6-7[5], 7-5, 6-1), Mario Ancic (4-6, 6-3, 7-5) and Janko Tipsarevic (6-2, 6-1) before facing his first seeded opponent in the semifinals.
Even as the world’s No. 4 player, Davydenko came into his semifinal Friday night matchup against No. 6 Andy Roddick an underdog – in five matches, Roddick had beaten the Russian each time. Hot off a victory against top-seeded Roger Federer Thursday, Roddick seemed a shoe-in for his second career final in Miami.
Then came the match. In a game-for-game first set, Davydenko edged Roddick in a 7-6(5) tiebreak, then shut down the American as he finished the second set 6-2.
“It was really surprising. In the first set, I didn’t know if I could win this match – he had a good serve, and I had no chance of returning,” Davydenko said. “When I was coming to the tiebreak, I thought, ‘maybe I’ll get a lucky tiebreak.’ For me today, it was a good baseline rally.”
Nadal leads 2-0 all-time against Davydenko, but each match has been taken to three sets and each of the six sets has been decided by two or fewer games.
“(Playing) Nadal is good for me. He is No. 2. He is a good player,” Davydenko said. “I don’t want to say anything about the final, just that I’ll try my best.” |
